Abstract

Water quality is a determining factor for the success of catfish (Pangasius sp.) aquaculture, especially during the nursery phase which is highly sensitive to environmental changes. This study aims to analyze water quality parameters in catfish nursery ponds at Pokdakan Mitra Mina Mandiri and provide management recommendations. The practicum was conducted on December 5, 2025, in Tuatunu Village, Pangkal Pinang, measuring parameters including nitrate, nitrite, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, and phosphate. Data were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively, then compared with SNI 7550:2009 quality standards and scientific literature. Results indicated critical water quality conditions with pH (9.38), ammonia (0.25 mg/L), nitrite (0.5 mg/L), nitrate (25 mg/L), and phosphate (5 mg/L) exceeding quality standards, while DO (7 mg/L) was in optimal condition. The combination of highly alkaline pH and elevated ammonia created toxic conditions by increasing the proportion of harmful unionized NH₃. High nitrate and phosphate levels indicated excessive nutrient accumulation that could trigger eutrophication. The main causes were high stocking density (12,000 fish/m²), organic matter accumulation, and suboptimal biofiltration systems. Recommendations include gradual pH reduction, feed reduction, increased water exchange, biofilter installation, probiotic application, stocking density adjustment, feed management optimization, and implementation of routine monitoring SOPs to improve productivity and aquaculture sustainability.
